St. Martin’s University students welcome families to residence halls for a new trick-or-treat tradition

LACEY

More than 200 goblins, witches and other costumed revelers turned out Saturday, Oct. 26, for a trick-or-treating tour through the residence halls of Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.

Student tour guides led children and their parents, most of them from the Saint Martin’s and greater South Sound community, to the Halloween-decorated rooms of students, who donned their own costumes and had baskets of sweets and candy ready to pass around.

A total of 95 student volunteers joined in the fun as they helped facilitate the annual event, now in its fourth year, according to Saint Martin’s University Housing and Residence Life, which coordinated the trick-or-treat tour.

This event is an important tradition that creates an opportunity for local kids to trick or treat in a safe and fun environment, says Heather Nicole Saladino, residence director for Parsons Hall at Saint Martin’s. Our student volunteers are always happy for a chance like this to give back to their community. Students put a lot of care and energy into preparation for this event and are excited to welcome our surrounding community to our campus with our traditional Benedictine hospitality.

In addition to trick-or-treating, the children received free, bright orange bags to collect their treats and were invited to partake of other activities, including watching Halloween movies and decorating cookies. They also received souvenir photos of themselves in costume.
