New projects for the Office for Youth and Young Adult Evangelization

AppNow there’s a local mobile app for Catholic young adults looking for Mass times, events, young adult groups, video and media, service opportunities and news.

The app was launched Jan. 20 by the Archdiocese of Seattle’s Office for Youth and Young Adult Evangelization. Download the Apple app by searching for “WWCatholicYA” or “Catholic Young Adult” or going here. An Android app will be released next according to Bridget Harris, the archdiocese's director of young adult and Hispanic youth ministries.

SymphonyThe young adult office also kicked off 2014 with a “Night at the Symphony” Jan. 17, when 40 young adults joined special guest Auxiliary Bishop Eusebio Elizondo at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall. Some of the group attended Mass at St. James Cathedral before the concert, a Seattle Symphony performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.

According to FatherContinuing in 2014 is the young adult office’s “According to Father” video series. It features priests from throughout the archdiocese answering questions submitted by Catholics on topics such as, “Why did God create someone to do evil like in the case of Judas?” and “Why do Catholics kneel during the consecration?”

RallyFor junior high-age Catholics, March 1 marks the Junior High Rally at Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett. Parish Youth Ministry Services hosts the annual spring event, this year themed “Faithcraft: What Shall We Build?”

The rally will include a keynote address by Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, Mass, music and activities like human foosball, all of which aim to engage sixth- to ninth-grade Catholics from Washington, Oregon and Canada. For more information, go to www.seattlearchdiocese.org/JHR.

CYO Summer CampSummer may be months away, but the archdiocese’s Catholic Youth Organization has already started registration for its two resident camp locations, day camps and trip opportunities. New this year is a Lego Camp that will teach elementary-aged kids engineering skills, an extra session of CYO’s popular horse camp, laser tag and archery options, more workshops and individualized experiences for high school campers, and — if funds are successfully raised — a new campfire circle at Camp Don Bosco.

All of the CYO camping options involve a fun “Catholic immersion experience,” said Megan Raymond, the archdiocese’s CYO camp services director. For more information on the camps, and to register, go to www.seattlearchdiocese.org/camping.
