Public can write memories, prayers on ‘tribute boards’ at Catholic cemeteries

SEATTLE

This Memorial Day, May 27, wreaths will be laid during special ceremonies at the archdiocese’s cemeteries as part of a national movement by Catholic cemeteries to honor the service and sacrifice of those in the military.

“Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes” was developed by the Catholic Cemetery Conference to remember those who have lost their lives while serving the country, as well as recognize veterans and active military personnel.

“We are excited to be participating in this heartfelt program and are glad to have the opportunity to give thanks to the military members and veterans within our community for their commitment and service,” said Richard Peterson, director of the archdiocese’s Associated Catholic Cemeteries and a member of the national organization’s board.

As part of the special observance, “tribute boards” are available at the four archdiocesan-operated cemeteries through Memorial Day. Visitors are invited to write the names of friends and loved ones who have served, along with remembrances and prayers, Peterson said.

On Memorial Day, Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at each of the archdiocesan cemeteries — Gethsemane in Federal Way, St. Patrick in Kent, Calvary in Seattle and Holyrood in Shoreline.

Before Mass, a deacon who is a veteran will give a reflection and a military honor guard will accompany the wreath-laying ceremony. At each cemetery, someone in uniform or a veteran will be asked to do the honor of laying the wreath, Peterson said.

During Mass, there will be special prayers of intercession, and military and veteran volunteers will be asked to bring up the gifts, he said.

“We are inspired by these individuals and hope our participation in the ‘Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes’ program can be just one way to say thanks for all they have done for us,” Peterson said.
