After our update last month on Archbishop Emeritus Alex J. Brunett (1997–2010), a number of readers asked about (1975–1991). We inquired through Father Michael G. Ryan, pastor of St. James Cathedral Parish, who said the archbishop, 93, appreciated the thought but didn’t feel up to doing an interview.

Archbishop Hunthausen currently lives in a Helena, Montana, nursing facility with his brother, Father Jack Hunthausen, who has a bedroom next to his. Father Ryan said they are both surrounded with lots of love and care. “Even though it is pretty much confined to a wheelchair, the state of his body is in no way reflective of the state of his mind,” Father Ryan said in an email. “He is clear as a bell, full of life, joy, gratitude and good humor.”

While spending a day at the archbishop’s residence last December, Father Ryan concelebrated Mass with him and his brother. Their sister, Sister Edna, was with them for what Father Ryan described as a holy and prayerful moment. “When it came time for the intercessions, the list of people prayed for was about as long as the entire Mass,” he said. “The archbishop prayed very intentionally for the church in Seattle, the bishops, priests, sisters and all the people.”
