Julia Hughes, a longtime Washington state resident, died May 27. She was 83.

She was born and raised in Nashville, Tenn., and trained as a registered nurse.

She volunteered as the school nurse at Our Lady of Fatima School in Seattle for many years. She also enjoyed gardening, needlework and celebrating family birthdays and holidays.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; and son, Dr. Michael Hughes.

Survivors include her daughters, Teresa Gilbert, Lisa Taliaferro and Cynthia McKinney; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 31 at Holy Rosary Church.

Frank David LaFazia  Jr.SEATTLE

Frank LaFazia, a member of Holy Rosary Parish, died June 17. He was 70.

He was born in Bremerton, graduated from O’Dea High School, and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and counseling from Seattle University. He worked as an educator, counselor and school administrator before retiring in 2005.

At Holy Rosary, he was active on the parish council and school board and with CYO.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; son, David; daughter, Andrea; and four grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated June 22 at Holy Rosary Church.

Helen Domick  MurphySHORELINE

Helen Murphy, a member of St. Mark Parish, died June 17. She was 95.

She was born in Glasgow, Mont., and moved the Washington state as a young woman. She attended the University of Washington, and during World War II she served as a nurse in the U.S. Navy.

She worked as a school nurse and at Northwest Hospital. She was also a councilwoman for the City of Tumwater.

Over the years she also was active at St. Michael Parish in Olympia and Christ the King Parish in Seattle, where she served as extraordinary minister of holy Communion. She also enjoyed painting, photography and baking.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, John; sons, Michael, Brian, and James; daughters, Patricia Peyton, Kathleen Murphy, Maureen Condit, Ileana Haggerty, Joan Weis, Sharon Curtis, Diane Payne and Claire Chacharon; 29 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated June 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Church.

Daniel D. O’SheaSEATTLE

Daniel O’Shea, a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, died May 19 of heart failure. He was 84.

He grew up in the Queen Anne and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Due to a partial hearing loss, he was educated at the Devereux School in Devon, Pa.

When he returned to Seattle he worked as a warehouse laborer until 1968. He enjoyed traveling by cruises and road trips across the country and to 40 countries. His family remembers his amazing memory, love of maps and geography. When he met people he would often surprise them with detailed knowledge of their cities.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 24 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

Timothy  Arnold  RashBOTHELL

Timothy Rush, a member of St. Matthew Parish, died June 16 from heart failure. He was 50.

He was born in Seattle and graduated from St. Matthew School, Bishop Blanchet High School and community college. He was a department manager for the City of Seattle Office of Economic Development for over 30 years.

He also enjoyed coaching baseball, soccer and basketball.

He is survived by his son, Griffin; daughters, Kayla Rash, Tori Rash and Carly Rash; and brothers and sisters.

A funeral Mass was to be celebrated June 26 at St. Matthew Church in Seattle.
