George A. Bader Jr.UNIVERSITY PLACEGeorge Bader Jr., a member of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Everett and St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Lakewood, died March 7 of cancer. He was 84. He was born in Tacoma, where he attended Holy Rosary School and Bellarmine Preparatory School. He later attended Seattle University and worked in management for The Boeing Company until his retirement in 1989.He was very involved in parish life, serving as pastoral council president, as a finance council member and in other positions at St. Mary Magdalen Parish. He served as an usher and lector at St. Frances Cabrini Parish and was a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.He served in the Marines for 10 years in California, Korea, Japan and Bolivia. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.He was preceded in death by his sisters Hilda, Bernadette and Rosemary. He is survived by his sisters Loretta Boyle and Lorraine Ross; brother, Art; wife, Tamara Jennings; son, Scott; daughters, Jolene, Karlene, Virginia and Sandra; and six grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 12 at St. Frances Cabrini Church.
Gerald Patrick Fleming BurkeBOTHELLGerald Burke, member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, died March 2 of cancer. He was 74.He was born in Kirkland and worked as a realtor until his retirement last month. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Sierra Club and was president of the Kennard Homeowners Association. He served as an extraordinary minister of holy Communion at his parish and was a member of the SacraMentors group. He enjoyed charity work, traveling and spending time with his family and wife of 46 years. He was preceded in death by his brother Doug Fleming. He is survived by his brother Joe; sister, Suzie; wife, Joan; sons, Patrick, Renato and Andrew; daughters, Peggy Corbett and Colleen Moen; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 8 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
George N. DiJulioMERCER ISLANDGeorge DiJulio, a longtime member of St. Monica Parish, died Feb. 13 of heart failure. He was 93.He was born in Seattle and attended Franklin High School and the University of Washington. He worked as a restaurant owner, owning restaurants such as Plaid Piper, Casa Villa, Hungry Turtle and Turtle Too. He was the cofounder of the Seattle Jesuit Club Annual Appreciation Dinner, member of the Seattle Restaurant Association, former president of the St. Monica’s Men’s Club, founder of St. Monica’s Annual Dinner Auction, and former president of the Mercerwood Shore Club. He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Wilson; sons, George Jr., Chris, Patrick, Douglas and Matthew; daughters, Mary Elizabeth and Lisa; 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 25 at St. Monica Church.
Donald Vincent GagnerREDMONDDonald Gagner, who attended St. Alphonsus Parish in Seattle for 30 years, died Feb. 1. He was 86.He was born in Seattle and attended O’Dea high school. He served as an Army corporal in the Korean War. He owned thoroughbred horses, and was a glazier and owner of an aluminum window business. He enjoyed gambling and gardening.He was preceded in death by his sisters Cecelia Williamson and Holy Names Sister Lillian Gagner; and brothers, Robert and Harold. He is survived by his sisters Maribeth Pederson and Sally McGlynn. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 11 at Holy Family Church in Kirkland.
Therese “Terry” Huddleston HarlettSEATTLETherese Harlett, member of St. Therese Parish, died March 4. She was 73.She was born in Pasadena, Calif., and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington. She was a member of the Eastside Women’s Forum and Toastmasters. She was a homemaker and volunteer at the Bellevue Art Museum. Her pastimes included art, cycling and travel.She was preceded in death by her husband, John. She is survived by her sister, Judy Haus; daughters, Jennifer, Sarah and Maria Shoup; and a grandchild.A funeral Mass was celebrated March 9 at St. Therese Church.
Father Neill Meany, SJSPOKANEJesuit Father Neill Meany died March 4 at the Jesuit infirmary in Spokane. He was 89.He was born in Milbank, S.D. He attended Bellarmine Preparatory School, joined the Jesuit Novitiate at Sheridan, Ore., and then attended Alma College in California for theology studies. He was ordained a priest in 1954.He taught in schools and held administrative duties at the Jesuit offices in Portland. He also designed the stained glass windows at St. Joseph Church in Yakima.He learned Spanish in Mexico and spent over 40 years involved with parish life in Yakima, Granger and Naches. He was preceded in death by his sisters Catherine Bischel and Joan Sullivan. He is survived by his sister Rosalie Leba and his brother, Bill. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 9 at St. Aloysius Church in Spokane.
Sister Lucy Margaret St. Hilaire, SP (Sister Marisita)SEATTLEProvidence Sister Lucy St. Hilaire died March 7 at St. Joseph Residence. She was 83.She was born in Yakima and attended St. Joseph Academy. She entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Providence in 1949 and took her final vows in 1954. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Great Falls in Montana, as well as an Elementary Teaching Certificate and a Master of Arts degree from Seattle University. She studied art at Mount St. Mary College in Los Angeles, received educational training at St. Francis Medical Center in Wisconsin, and attended numerous educational conferences throughout the world. She taught at various Washington schools, including Holy Family and John F. Kennedy High in Seattle; St. Michael in Olympia; and Providence Academy, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. James in Vancouver. She served on the administrative team at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle, and as a chaplain at St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. She volunteered at Providence Child Center and as a team member of RCIA at All Saints Parish in Portland. She enjoyed pottery, quilting, oil painting and gardening.She was preceded in death by her brothers Thomas and James. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Roy and Providence Sister Alice St. Hilaire; brothers Timothy, Paul and Theodore; and many nieces and nephews.A funeral Mass was celebrated March 18 at Mount St. Vincent Chapel.
Helga Benson StensonBELLEVUEHelga Stenson, a member of St. Louise Parish, died Feb. 27. She was 92.She was born in Barton, N.D., and moved to Washington state as a middle-aged woman. She was an organist at St. Louise Church, and was a homemaker who enjoyed baking and cooking for her family and friends.She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Mark Stenson; and daughter Mary Ann. She is survived by her sister, Florence Hay; daughters Patricia, Claire and Julia; sons, Michael, Mark, James and Robert; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 13 at St. Louise Church.
Carla Marie Holden TheisenMOUNT VERNONCarla Theisen, a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, died Feb. 28. She was 69.She was born in Boston and came to Washington as a small child. She attended Seattle University and Sorbonne University in Paris, France. She worked as a kindergarten teacher in Seattle and was a member of the French Club in Mount Vernon.She was preceded in death by her sister, Paula Holden; and her mother, Dorris Holden. She is survived by her husband, Jack; sisters, Mary Lyons and Teresa Buckland; and father, Paul Holden.A funeral Mass was celebrated March 7 at Immaculate Conception Church.
Sister Henry Louise Wyatt, OSFTACOMAFranciscan Sister Henry Wyatt, who volunteered at St. Joseph Medical Center, died on March 2. She was 78.She was born in Corona, Calif., and earned a Bachelor of Arts in art from the University of San Diego. She ministered in child care at the St. Ann Home and taught at California elementary schools.She served as a hospice volunteer at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma and since 2005 lived at the St. Marguerite Convent volunteering in local house ministry.She is survived by her niece and nephew, and grandnieces and grandnephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 6 at St. Leo the Great Church in Tacoma.
