Nora Aguilar ArcillaLYNNWOODNora Arcilla, a member of St. Pius X Parish in Mountlake Terrace, died Feb. 24. She was 53. She was born in Manila, Phillipines, and moved to Washington state as a young woman. She attended Catanduanes State College. She worked as a housekeeper and an unregulated care provider until she retired in 2001, and she enjoyed cooking and singing karaoke. She is survived by her parents, José and Soledad Aguilar; husband, Jaime; daughter, Jaira Lynn; and son, Jainar.
Nicola “Nick” BuonoROSEVILLE, CALIF.Nicola Buono, a member of St. Joseph and St. Matthew parishes in Seattle, died Feb. 10. He was 103.He was born in Bari, Italy, and attended Colman (now Thurgood Marshall) Elementary School in Seattle. He was self-employed in the family business, contracting and cabinet-making at A. Buono Construction and Cabinet Shop. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society, Sons of Italy and the Millmen’s Union in Seattle. He became a U.S. citizen in 1934 and retired in 1974.He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmela Rossetti Buono. He is survived by his son, Frank Buono; daughters, Lucia Walters, Marianna Pignataro and Gloria Doolittle; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.A funeral Mass will be celebrated Mar. 21 at St. Joseph Church.
Robert “Bill” CourageNORMANDY PARKRobert Courage, a longtime member of St. Paul Parish in Seattle and Holy Disciples Parish in Puyallup, died Feb. 9 from congestive heart failure. He was 88.Born in Seattle, he attended Santa Clara University and San Jose State. He worked as a carpet installer and then salesman at Pitcher Brothers House of Carpets. He served in the Navy during World War II and then played catcher for minor league baseball teams such as the Portland Beavers and the Spokane Indians. He was an avid sports fan, and he took great pride in his lawn and gardening.He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara. He is survived by his brother, Jack; daughters, Karen Wuotila and Mary Burnett; sons, Todd, Kurt, Kelly and Troy; sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 19 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Seattle.
Barbara Westford DanielsonLAKEWOOD, COLO.Barbara Danielson died Feb. 9. She was 69.She was born in Bellingham. After serving as an Army nurse she worked as an artist and held a degree in fine arts. She was an active and faithful Catholic who taught painting to the disabled and was honored to have met Pope John Paul II.She is survived by her mother, Veronica Westford; brothers, Jack, Jim and Mike; husband, Kurt; and daughters, Cheryl Blattler and Erikka Danielson.A funeral service was held Feb. 22 at Sacred Heart Church in Bellingham.
Peter Muiruri KamauLYNNWOODPeter Kamau, a member of St. Thomas More Parish, died Feb. 5 from a brain hemorrhage. He was 75.He was born in Kanyariri, Kenya. He received a Bachelor of Arts in economics and history from Yankton College, and a Bachelor of Science in political science and public administration from the University of Oregon. He worked as a teacher and as an interpreter of Swahili and Kikuyu in court cases.He was a member of the NorthWest Kenyans Association and sponsored two of his nephews, Ken and Amos, when they emigrated from Kenya. He enjoyed participating in his parish’s multicultural festivals, walking in the park and watching Animal Planet.He is survived by his wife, June; and daughters, Meredith Macharia and Jennie Kamau. A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 11 at at St. Thomas More Church.
Mary Ellen McNultySEATTLEMary McNulty, a member of St. Joseph Parish, died Jan. 30. She was 72.She was born in Portland, Ore., and attended Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, Mich. She retired from Group Health Cooperative in 2003 and enjoyed reading. She was preceded in death by her brother, Timothy; and sister Roxanne Norman. She is survived by her sister Kathleen Moreland. A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 16 at St. Benedict Church.
Martin J. MillerLAGUNA BEACH, CALIF.Martin Miller, an O’Dea High School graduate who went on to establish a dental practice in Anaheim, Calif., died Feb. 2. He was 87.Born and raised in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, he attended St. Alphonsus School and was a member of the O’Dea class of 1943.He served in the Navy during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. Educated in the Navy’s College V-12 Program at Gonzaga University in Spokane and Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., he went on to the University of Washington where he was a member of the dental program’s first graduating class in 1950.He moved to Anaheim, and upon retirement relocated to Laguna Beach, Calif. He was known for his love of sports, particularly O’Dea’s athletic teams and Gonzaga basketball.He was predeceased by two of his brothers, Francis and James.He is survived by his wife, Hermien, of Laguna Beach; sons, Martin, Matthew and Steve; daughters, Diane and Teresa; and brothers Roman and Louis.A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Laguna Beach.Remembrances may be made to the Dominican Sisters of Adrian Michigan, 1257 E. She retired from work as a registered nurse in 1988, and enjoyed knitting and reading.She was preceded in death by her husband, James; and her sons, Dave and Tim. She worked as a realtor for Windermere Real Estate Company until September 2012.She was a member of St. Veronica’s Guild and the Altar Society. She was actively involved in her parish and her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Theresa. She is survived by her husband, Andrew; sons, Michael and Dan; daughters, Monica, Anne and Mary Maltby; and six grandchildren.A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 19 at Our Lady of the Lake Church.
