Mary Ellen Blackburn, a former member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Federal Way, died April 30. She was 91.

She was born in Juntura, Ore. She received a master’s degree from Seattle University and taught in both public and parochial schools before retiring in 1987.

She enjoyed traveling to Europe and was proud of her Irish heritage.

She was preceded in death by her husband, June Blackburn.

Survivors include her daughters, Marylin Berschauer, Kathleen Spinks and Barbara Kearns; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 4 at St. Elizabeth Church in John Day, Ore.

Mary Bryon, a member of Our Lady of Good Help Parish, died March 30. She was 95.

She was born in Black Diamond and attended Knapps Business College. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for Byron Bros., Inc.

Her pastimes included gardening, watching baseball and volunteering at her parish and local food bank.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; son Michael; and granddaughter Danielle Henry.

Survivors include her sons Bob and Pat; daughters, Dominican Sister Judy Byron, Diane Henry, Chris Backlund, Jacqueline Byron and Kathleen Byron; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated April 2 at Our Lady of Good Help Church.

Arnetta Farley FilipowiczAUBURN

Arnetta Filipowicz died of heart failure on April 22. She was 82.

She was born in Fireco, W.Va. She moved to Washington state over 25 years ago, and was a homemaker.

She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Filipowicz.

Survivors include her sons, Ralph and Allen; daughters, Patricia Eastham and Medea McGraw; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

She was interred at Gethsemane Cemetery.

Barbara Brady HenneghanSEATTLE

Barbara Henneghan, a member of Christ Our Hope Parish and St. Louise de Marillac Parish in Bellevue, died May 2. She was 74.

She was born in Perth Amboy, N.J., and received a doctorate in education from Seattle University. She became a principal at St. Pius X School in Mountlake Terrace and Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Seattle.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; son, Paul Jr.; daughter, Ann; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was interred at Calvary Cemetery.

Victoria Georgienko KlosEDMONDS

Victoria Klos, a member of Holy Rosary Parish, died April 26 of cancer. She was 81.

She was born in Romania and moved to Western Washington over 50 years ago. She had an associate’s degree in medical technology and worked as a technologist at Ballard Hospital and Veterans Administration Hospital.

She enjoyed gardening, intricate embroideries and creating Ukrainian Easter eggs.

She is survived by her sons, Petro and Julian; daughters, Christina Spencer and Marta Korduba; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 1 at Holy Rosary Church.

Donald M. StapletonRENTON

Donald Stapleton, a member of St. Anthony Parish, died May 14 of cancer. He was 63.

He was born in Elk and moved to Seattle as a young man. He attended Seattle Community College and was employed as an engineer.

He volunteered with Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed community development.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; son, Timothy; daughter, Rebecca; and siblings.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated May 24 at St. Anthony Church.

Leonard P. ZuvelaEVERETT

Leonard Zuvela, a member of Immaculate Conception and St. Mary Magdalen parishes, died of cancer on March 27. He was 86.

He was born in Hibbing, Minn., and moved to Western Washington as a child. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944–48 and was in the honor guard for General MacArthur in Japan.

He worked at Weyerhauser Pulp Mill as an instrument mechanic. He enjoyed hiking, bicycling and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; sons, Steven and Curt; daughters, Christine, Michele and Ruth; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated April 3 at Immaculate Conception Church.
