VATICAN CITY – At the beginning of a year people hope will mark the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pope Francis urged them to create a “culture of care,” including by sharing the gift of their time with others.
Each year on January 1, the Church celebrates Mary as the Mother of God. It is from Mary that Jesus took flesh — our humanity.

Every morning as I get ready to start a new day, an inevitable part of my attire is my wristwatch. Apart from being very useful in telling time, it is for me a true sacrament of my father, may he rest in peace. On the back, I had engraved my father’s name, the date of his death and the phrase “With eternal gratitude.” Most probably, we all have sacraments like this in our lives.
WASHINGTON – Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has announced the U.S. bishops will join the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops May 1 in consecrating the two nations to the care of the Blessed Mother under the title “Mary, Mother of the Church.”
