When I heard Cardinal Wilton Gregory would be the keynote speaker for our Black Catholic Advisory Circle’s conference, I was thrilled, but I never imagined I’d get to talk to him. However, the Lord works in mysterious ways, and the opportunity to interview him landed with me.
I was nervous to get on an 8 a.m. video call to discuss faith, race and the world today with a living legend. I double-checked the proper greeting for a cardinal. I read profiles of him. I wrote questions to ask, deleted them, wrote different ones.
Once the call started, all worries ceased. He was funny and thoughtful, honest and direct. Yes, he’s a cardinal, a synod delegate, even a “Jeopardy!” clue, but he reminded me, he’s “still Wilton the priest.”
I hope you take time to read the interview. His reflections are important as we head into Black Catholic History Month in November and as we look for ways to grow as Catholics.
Keep the faith.
